It was truly a blessing to see so many organizations and everyday citizens providing relief to those affected by Hurricane Harvey. From the massive organization Samaritan’s Purse to San Antonio citizens basing out of their truck, so many people are in South Texas helping provide for those who have lost everything. In James chapter 2 God makes it clear for us to provide for those in need.
“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,  and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!  But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.” James 2:14-24
James is not saying we are justified by works and not faith. He is saying our works prove our faith in Jesus. When our brothers and sisters are in need and we don’t answer the call, we are not proving the faith that resides in us with Jesus. We cannot merely say we are Christians. We must live like we are Christians. Jesus was on the move all day everyday healing, preaching and providing for those in need. Because of this the entire region knew His name and came to Him. If we are to be the hands and feet of Christ than we must go where we are needed in order to provide physical and spiritual needs for people, just like Jesus. Abraham was justified because his works proved his faith in God. Christians lip service is not enough when it comes to living for Jesus. Prove your faith by your works!! Live out what God has put in! You can start by helping with Hurricane Harvey in three ways.
1. If you can go, go!
If you are able to go down to South Texas and help, go! That will be the best and most efficient way to provide for the needs of those hurt by the Hurricane. Through organizations like Samaritans Purse you can get plugged into different worksites that help fix houses, clear trees and gut moldy houses in order for people to start rebuilding their homes! Right now they need manpower to tackle the overwhelming task of cleaning up after Hurricane Harvey
2. If you can give, give!
Some of you may not be able to go down south to serve physically. Maybe because of work schedules, baby sitting issues or you just can’t physically do any manual labor. If this is the case, then give! If you would like to donate to the cause of helping Hurricane Harvey victims you can donate money at The Lazarus Design or Samaritan’s Purse and we will both send aid and supplies to those in need. We can’t all go but we can all give! Let’s help those in need rebuild their lives in the name of Jesus.
3. If you can’t go and you can’t give, pray!
If you can’t go or give, then pray, pray, pray. Prayer is the Christian’s most powerful weapon and we need God to provide miracles for everyone involved with Hurricane Harvey. Pray for the victims and responders as they tackle the daunting task of rebuilding South Texas.
Together we can show the love of Jesus to those hurt by Hurricane Harvey. It is through our actions that we show who we belong to. Let’s not be Christians who say we love people, let us be Christians who show that we love people! May God bless you and keep you. Keep our brothers and sisters in Christ down south in your prayers!
Your brother in Christ,
Jacob Rowe
